The Vancouver Chamber Music Society brings together four leading chamber musicians with ties to Vancouver whose extensive solo and chamber music careers have taken them across the globe.
Violinist David Gillham received the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal in honour of his contributions to the arts in Canada in 2002. He is on faculty at the University of British Columbia and Vancouver Academy of Music. Gillham performs on a violin made by Carlo Tononi in 1725, Venice.
David Harding, noted for his “eloquent viola playing,” enjoys performing both core chamber music literature and working with composers such as Philip Glass on new commissions. Former Associate Professor of Viola at the University of British Columbia, Harding is currently Professor of Viola and Chamber Music at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh.
Ariel Barnes has been hailed as “truly an inspiring artist…the outstanding Canadian Cellist of his generation” by the late Maestro Bramwell Tovey. Described as creating a “mesmerizing musical experience” by combining his “deep personal connection” (Toronto Live Music Report) and “luscious tone and technical prowess” (The Vancouver Sun), Barnes is currently Principal Cellist of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra.
Japanese pianist Chiharu Iinuma has been increasingly in high demand as a teacher, coach, and ensemble pianist. Chiharu has served as a staff pianist and coach at institutes such as the Meadowmount School of Music, Indiana University Summer String Academy and currently at the Domaine Forget International Music and Dance Academy in Quebec, Canada. She is also currently on the piano faculty at the Vancouver Academy of Music.
